How deep do I have to dive to pass FII Level 1, FII Level 2, and FII Level 3 courses?

The FII curriculum is based on skills and academic mastery that respect the individual’s goals in freediving. In other words, not everyone who wants to be a better freediver wants to dive deep, and just because people dive deep doesn’t mean they are safe or proficient freedivers. Therefore we do not see depth as the ideal measure of freediving proficiency.

FII courses are designed to train freedivers in the specific skills and knowledge required to safely and effectively dive the maximum depth of the course (should they choose to). To pass a course, students must demonstrate that they understand the academic work by attaining a minimum of 80 percent on the final test, and they must demonstrate skill mastery according to the course skill guidelines (e.g., FII Level 1 has twenty-eight individual skills or “check points” to pass for technical proficiency). Some of these skills can only be demonstrated in negative buoyancy; therefore, some skills must be completed at depths appropriate for the course level.
