What freediving gear will I need for an FII Level 1 Freediver course?

You don’t need any gear specific to freediving, although it is always preferred, especially a wetsuit. You will need a mask, a basic snorkel, a full-length wetsuit, snorkel fins or long blades, a weight belt and small 1–2 lb weights, and a waterproof timing device.

The thickness of your wetsuit will depend on the location of your course, the time of the year, and your tolerance to cold. Generally, a 3 mm thickness is suitable for waters 75°F and up, 5 mm for water temperatures between 60°F and 75°F, and 7 mm for colder waters.

Open-cell freediving wetsuits are warmer and much more comfortable than other types of wetsuits. If you need to purchase new gear for your course or if you are not sure whether the equipment you have is suitable, contact your course instructor first. You will always get the best advice based on your needs and your location. Many FII instructors are also able to arrange rental gear if they are informed of the need ahead of time.
