How do I become an FII Spearfishing Instructor?

The FII Spearfishing curriculum has been designed to create a reliable foundation of knowledge that will carry its graduates for the rest of their lives. Whether seasoned underwater hunters or newcomers to the sport, graduates will leave this course with the skills necessary to be successful, safe, more observant, and ethically sound hunters.

This aim places high demands and responsibilities on the selection and subsequent training of the candidates for the FII Spearfishing Instructor specialty rating.

Candidates for the FII Spearfishing Instructor course and exam are required to be experienced FII Level 1 Instructors with a history of teaching at least 25 students. They also must have an FII Spearfishing certification and above-average spearfishing experience. Each candidate must submit letters of recommendation from either two FII Spearfishing Specialty Instructors or two well-known and respected spearfishing figures. The letters should describe the writers’ firsthand knowledge and experience with respect to the candidate’s spearfishing expertise, ethics, and safety attitude.

The course and exam are generally run over three or four days, with several “learning and testing” stages.

Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may:

  1. Teach FII Spearfishing courses
  2. Engage in supervising and guiding spearfishing trips and sessions
  3. Create and submit their own outline of a Spearfishing Specialty Clinic to FII for approval to teach
